I just finished the Firestaff Collection. I have to say, for not being published, they are certainly some of the better works I've read - to be honest, better than most of the recent fantasy currently in print, and certainly better than Eragon or Harry Potter or Mercedes Lackey. This is primarily because the characters, plots, and deus ex machinae are all believable....
You might take a look; they're not too much a waste of time.

How much of a waste of time are they? How long did it take you to read?
The individual books didn't take long; I think only the third took more than a day. (Understanding, here, that I do not mean a consecutive sixteen-hour period, as I have finals and studying and etc., but rather perhaps four or five hours total throughout each day. I would have been done much faster were it not for this.) There are, however, seven complete, and one incomplete, and I read rather quickly.
Interesting. I might check that out...
